Problems Solved

What this course fixes

Studies produced by software but not understood or defensible

Network models with data quality problems that invalidate results

Grid connection submissions returned for rework

Contingency and fault studies not translated into protection settings

Learning Outcomes

What participants can do after the programme

Outcomes are written as tasks, not topics — so managers can verify capability back at work.

  • Build and validate a network model with correct machine, transformer and load data
  • Run and interpret load flow studies, including voltage and reactive planning
  • Perform short-circuit studies and use results for equipment rating and protection
  • Set up contingency and N-1 assessments
  • Document a study to a standard acceptable for grid submission

Course Outline

Detailed programme content

Day 1 — Modelling Fundamentals

  • Per-unit system, network representation and data requirements
  • PSS®E environment, case files and data validation
  • Building and checking a working network case

Day 2 — Load Flow & Fault Studies

  • Load flow solution methods, convergence and troubleshooting
  • Voltage control, reactive compensation and tap strategy
  • Short-circuit analysis and equipment rating checks

Day 3 — Studies & Reporting

  • Contingency analysis and switching studies
  • Introduction to dynamic study set-up and stability screening
  • Workshop: complete a study and produce a report pack

Practical Work

Practical exercises and case studies

Sessions are built around calculations, data interpretation and technical decisions. Case material is generic or anonymised — no client-confidential project data is used.

Building and validating a network case from supplied equipment data

Load flow studies with convergence troubleshooting and voltage assessment

Short-circuit study and equipment rating check exercise

Contingency study and preparation of a study report pack

Trainer Profile

Delivered by Ir. Hafiz Rahman

Lead Trainer — Pressure Equipment & ASME Codes

22 years industry experience

Hafiz has spent his career between the design office and the plant floor — sizing shells and heads in the morning, walking down repairs with an inspector in the afternoon. He teaches code work the way it is actually used: calculation sheets, nameplate data, and repair decisions that must survive an audit.

Real project exposure

  • Pressure vessel and heat exchanger design review for a Pengerang refinery expansion
  • Fitness-for-service assessment on ageing separators at an East Malaysia gas terminal
  • Turnaround inspection planning for a Kerteh petrochemical complex

Certifications

  • ASME Section VIII Div. 1 Design
  • API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspector
  • BEM Registered Professional Engineer
